Volunteer Training Opportunities
Usually through a grant, the Mandurah Wildlife Centre is able to offer many, free to volunteers, opportunities to improve their knowledge of how to care for our wildlife patients. These events can be whole day activities with speakers from other large centres like Kanyana or smaller half day events with speakers from local experienced carers with whom we work. These events are “hands on” and are a wonderful learning environment.
In April this year we had the opportunity to engage in four practical education days, to help
us upskill our understanding of animal anatomy. Our presenters were a practicing veterinarian and a bobtail specialist from Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Captive Breeding Centre in Lesmurdie. They taught us about the Bobtail flu and how to treat it. We also learned about the skeletal anatomy of birds and got to practice how to bandage a bird with a wing injury. In our next newsletter we will include a short video of the bandaging of a Galah with a wing injury.
Courtesy of a grant from the WA Department of Communities we were able to have a Volunteer appreciation day and could invite our good friends at PMC (Peel Marsupial Care), who provided education sessions about ringtail possums, brushtail possums and kangaroos. Lucky for us, in care they also had a delightful black gloved wallaby joey and a ‘blue flier’ red kangaroo. Such a treat!
