On Saturday, March 30, Mandurah Wildlife was placed on high alert authorities issued a bushfire warning for Dawesville and Bouvard. With a ‘Watch and Act’ notice in place nearby, our team immediately implemented emergency fire preparations to ensure the safety of the animals in our care.
Using our crisis response plan and emergency WhatsApp group, we monitored the fire’s progress in real time and called in extra hands to assist. Our dedicated volunteers worked swiftly, placing all animals into secure cages and preparing for potential evacuation. Essential supplies—food, water, medical kits, and transport carriers—were packed into vehicles, ensuring that if the order came to leave, we would be ready.
Thankfully, after several tense hours, the emergency was downgraded, and the situation stabilised. The animals were safely returned to their enclosures, and our volunteers were able to stand down.
A massive thank you to Braeley, Rere Huia, Wendy, and Sandy (who handled her first training shift like a pro), as well as Jane and Fiona, who arrived ready to assist. Your dedication and quick action exemplify the very best of Mandurah Wildlife.
We are incredibly grateful for every single volunteer who gives their time, energy, and heart to protect and care for our wildlife. Your commitment makes a real difference, and we couldn’t do it without you!
